Autism System Development

The Autism Systems Development Program seeks to advance, educate and empower the lives of individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Utah by monitoring occurrence, reducing the age at first diagnosis, referring to services, facilitating research, and providing education and outreach.

The Office:

  • Hosts the Utah Autism Initiative (UAI) Committee, a multi-agency workgroup
  • Funds the Utah Registry for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (URADD)
    • URADD collects and reports prevalence data on Utah Children with ASD and other developmental disabilities
    • The University of Utah, Department of Psychiatry, manages the collection and analysis of URADD data.
    • Chairs the URADD Oversight Committee to review all proposals using URADD data.

The Sources of Distress is a computerized tool that helps identify potential underlying treatment targets for irritability and agitation in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder that may go unrecognized or insufficiently treated. This tool guides parents and professional caregivers through a series of questions to describe what they know about the affected individual. After completing the Sources of Distress, parents and professional caregivers will receive a report that can be used to help treat the individual.

The Sources of Distress was developed by Dr. Deborah Bilder and is a service of the University of Utah, Department of Psychiatry.
